The books written by people who have experienced war with EMERGENCY offer more information about the organisation, its work, and the situation of the countries where it operates.
"Green Parrots" ("Pappagalli verdi" in Italian) is a book written by Dr. Gino Strada, where he narrates the story of ten years of his work - an extraordinary experience alongside war victims. The book combines private and personal notes, thoughts on the work of a war surgeon and descriptions of places and people, narrated in a direct, immediate manner free of rhetoric. It also provides analysis of the devastating effects of landmines - a central theme of the book.
The English version of "Pappagalli verdi" - "Green Parrots"- was published in November 2004 (Charta Edition) with a foreword by Howard Zinn, American historian, and an after word by Gino Strada.
The book (reprinted over 35 times in Italy) has sold more than 400,000 copies. It has been translated into French, German, Korean and Japanese.
